Mesoamerica Hunger Free focuses its efforts on supporting the generation and strengthening of public policies, regulatory instruments, and governance, management and coordination frameworks and mechanisms that enable public actors to carry out their work adequately and with full capacity, in order to:
- promote healthy diets for the entire population, including the most vulnerable;
- facilitate equitable access of the most vulnerable rural population to the resources needed to generate sustainable livelihoods; and
- put in place inclusive institutional mechanisms that enable the indigenous and agro-descendant population, rural women and youth to have equal access to opportunities.
Focus on demand, planning and governance
The Program's work stands out for its inclusive and participatory approach, characterized by identifying and addressing the challenges faced by the rural population of Mesoamerica from their origin, according to their priorities, needs and specific capacities, and in full alignment with the institutional agendas in each territory.
In addition, Mesoamerica Hunger Free implements actions at the Mesoamerican level that facilitate the exchange of experiences, the generation of knowledge, capacity building and dialogue at all levels, seeking to foster political and social commitment to the importance of adequately addressing food insecurity and rural poverty, because the solution to the problem of hunger requires, above all, political will.
From the field to public policy
The program proposes good practices and innovative development solutions that arise from the implementation of interventions in the field, in close collaboration with public institutions and family farmers in the most disadvantaged areas of the region.
The analysis and systematization of these interventions makes it possible to generate practical and useful knowledge for the formulation, strengthening, or implementation of regulatory instruments, public policy processes, or governance mechanisms that contribute in the fight against hunger.
Inter-institutional articulation
The program promotes collaboration, coordination and synergy generation among local, national and regional entities, channeling efforts to address jointly the priority needs and development challenges of lagging behind territories, and facilitating the mobilization of resources and their more efficient use.
This is how Mesoamerica Hunger Free becomes a catalyst, an instrument to strengthen the historical ties among the countries of the region, joining wills and commitments in the fight against hunger and rural poverty.
Mesoamerica Hunger Free strongly encourages and supports social and political dialogue and promotes enabling frameworks in the ten countries with which it works. The promotion of other processes at local and Mesoamerican levels complements this work at a national level. In this context, the partnerships that the Program has established with the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino), the Parliamentary Front against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean (FPH-ALC), the Ibero-American and Caribbean Parliamentary Alliance for Food Security, the Integration and Development Project of Mesoamerica, as well as Spanish Cooperation and Brasilian Cooperation are worth mentioning.
