This brief explains the relevance of gender equality and social inclusion (GSI) to SCALA, outlines proposed interventions in the SCALA country work plans, and summarizes useful resources and support available from the global team. SCALA GSI work consists of reducing barriers to participation in decision-making processes in the areas of adaptation and mitigation actions, inter-ministerial coordination, and climate action implementation through partnerships with the private sector.

This brief explains the context of the SCALA programme’s approach to transformational adaptation, which refers to a change in the fundamental attributes of a socioecological system in anticipation of climate change and its impacts. Adaptation interventions can be qualified as transformational when they include system-wide change or changes across more than one system, and involve direct questioning of the effectiveness of existing systems, social injustices and power imbalances.

SCALA promotes whole-of-government approaches through purposive multi-stakeholder engagement and consultation.
