2019年12月19日、国連総会は5月21日を「国際お茶の日」(International Tea Day)と制定しました。国際連合食糧農業機関（FAO）は、この国際デーの普及に積極的に取り組んでいます。2025年のテーマは、「お茶がもたらすより良い生活」です。
お茶は、水に次いで世界で2番目に飲まれている飲み物です。その起源は、5,000年以上前にさかのぼりますが、健康、文化、そして社会経済的発展への貢献は、現代においてもなお重要なものとされています。
お茶は世界の農村開発、貧困削減、食料安全保障において極めて重要な役割を果たしていて、持続可能な開発目標（SDGs）の達成にも貢献しています。お茶の生産や加工は、世界の何百万もの家庭にとっての収入源であり、遠隔地や経済的に恵まれない地域を含め、雇用の機会を提供しています。また、お茶の輸出は、多くの国にとって重要な外貨の収入源にもなっています。さらに、お茶を飲むことにより、心にも身体にも良い効果があるだけでなく、文化的にも重要な意味を持っています。
FAOは5月21日、大阪・関西万博 国連パビリオンにおいて、公益社団法人日本茶業中央会、全国茶商工業協同組合連合会、大阪府茶業協同組合の協力のもと、「国際お茶の日」のイベントを開催します。

On 19 December 2019, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 May of each year as International Tea Day and called on FAO to lead its observance. This year, the theme is “Tea for Better Lives”.
Tea is the world’s second most consumed drink, following water. The origins of tea stretch back more than 5,000 years, but its contributions to health, culture and socioeconomic development are still as relevant today.
Tea plays a pivotal role in rural development, poverty reduction, and food security globally, contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Tea production and processing constitutes a main source of livelihoods for millions of families, providing jobs including for people in remote and economically disadvantaged areas. Tea is also a main source of export revenues. Furthermore, tea consumption can bring health benefits and wellness, also not to mention the cultural significance of tea.
On 21 May 2025, FAO will host an event inside the UN Pavillion Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, in collaboration with “Koeki-Shadan-Hojin-Nihon-chagyo-chuo-kai (Public Interest Incorporated Association - Japan Tea Industry Central Association)”, “Zenkoku-Chashokogyo-Kyodo-Kumiai-Rengokai (National Federation of Tea Commerce and Industry Cooperative Associations) and the “Osaka-fu- Chagyo-Kyodo-Kumiai (Osaka Prefecture Tea Industry Cooperative)”.
