The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) reports on progress towards ending hunger, achieving food security and improving nutrition, and details key challenges to achieving these goals. Analyze. SOFI is one of the major reports of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and is an annual major report jointly produced by five UN agencies (FAO, IFAD, UNICEF, WFP and WHO).

As in previous years, the 2023 report will provide an update on the global food security and nutrition situation, including estimates of the costs of healthy eating. Then, in relation to the report theme “Urbanization, Agricultural and Food System Transformation, Healthy Diets in the Rural-Urban Continuum” and how this connection affects the availability and price of healthy diets, food security and nutrition.

Urbanization is changing the world's agricultural and food systems in a way that is incomprehensible through the conventional contrast between rural and urban areas. The changing patterns of population agglomeration along the rural-urban continuum and their linkages as venues for exchange and socioeconomic interaction are reshaping and being rebuilt by agriculture and food systems. is affecting the availability and price of diets and thus food security and nutrition.

These timely and important themes are in line with the United Nations General Assembly's New Urban Agenda, which seeks to reduce the risk of adverse impacts from transforming agriculture and food systems under urbanization, and improve food security. It will contribute new evidence on the policies, investments and actions needed to gain access to affordable and healthy diets to improve security and nutrition.

The report will be launched to the world on July 12, 2023 at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York. In Japan, we will hold an online announcement event in both Japanese and English on July 19th.

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2023 (SOFI 2023): Japan Launch

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) is a FAO annual flagship publication series that monitors progress towards globally agreed food security and nutrition targets, presenting and analyzing global, regional and country level trends, and providing in-depth analyses on emerging issues to inform decision making and contribute to the achievement of ending hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms. This report is jointly produced by five UN agencies (FAO, IFAD, UNICEF, WFP and WHO).

The 2023 edition of the report will, as usual, present the latest updates on the food security and nutrition situation around the world, including updated estimates on the cost and affordability of healthy diets. Subsequently, the report’s theme “Urbanization, agrifood systems transformation, and healthy diets across the rural-urban continuum” will explore how urbanization is shaping agrifood systems and the implications of this nexus for the availability and affordability of healthy diets, food security and nutrition.

Urbanization is changing agrifood systems globally in ways that can no longer be understood across the rural and urban divide. The changing pattern of population agglomerations along a rural–urban continuum and its interface as a place of exchange and socioeconomic interactions, is reshaping and being reshaped by agrifood systems, with implications for the availability and affordability of healthy diets, and in turn, for food security and nutrition.

Such timely and relevant theme is aligned with the UN General Assembly “New Urban Agenda” and will contribute new evidence on the policies, investments and actions needed to limit risks of the negative effects of agrifood system transformation under urbanization and enable opportunities for access to affordable healthy diets, to improve food security and nutrition. The theme will complement and guide the discussions at the 2023 HLPF – particularly on sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), and especially during the three-day ministerial segment of the forum held from 17 to 19 July 2023 and in the lead-up to the SDG Summit in September.

The report will be launched globally in the sidelines of the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in New York, on 12 July. A launch event in Japan will be held on 19 July, with both Japanese and English languages available.
