Trade Policy Space for Better Nutrition

Roundtable to support the 2024 edition of
The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets

Tuesday, 31 October 2023 | 11:00 ―12:30 CET
Sheikh Zayed Centre | FAO Headquarters

The FAO Markets and Trade Division will host a roundtable event on “Trade Policy Space for Better Nutrition.” This event relates to the preparation of the 2024 edition of FAO’s flagship report The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets (SOCO), which will be on the theme ‘Food Trade and Nutrition: Policy Approaches for Healthy Diets.’

The relationship between trade, food security and nutrition has gained increased attention on both the trade and development agendas, with trade recognized as one of the key means of implementation for achieving the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including for ending hunger and all forms of malnutrition. Trade can affect consumption patterns and diets, as it shapes the availability, diversity and prices of food products. Understanding the relationship between agricultural and trade policies and dietary patterns is crucial for improving nutrition and combating malnutrition globally. However, bringing into line agricultural domestic support and trade policies with interventions for better nutrition could be complex. Building and strengthening policy coherence by maximizing synergies and minimizing trade-offs between trade and nutrition policies is essential.

Join us for an open interactive discussion with a varied panel as we assess the trade policy space for better nutrition and explore how domestic support, trade policies and related policy measures can contribute to enabling the consumption of healthy diets and improving nutrition.

The event will be in hybrid modality.

Simultaneous interpretation will be available in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish and Russian.
