CMS was established at Perth College in Scotland, one of the 15 partner institutions of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) Millennium Institute. The Centre aims to be recognized globally as a centre of excellence on issues relating to sustainable development in mountain regions through research, consulting, teaching and outreach.
