In line with the World Water Week, and the "Water is Life" campaign, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Iraq, in cooperation with the Iraqi government, local authorities and fishermen, launched a campaign to clean the Al-Hawizeh Marsh from plastic waste and pollution.

Today Monday 5, the annual regional workshop among member countries of the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region commenced in a hybrid modality in Rabat, the Kingdom of Morocco. The coastal mangroves of Saudi Arabia, home to two crucial tree species - Rhizophora mucronata or Avicennia marina, known as the richest and most diverse and productive ecosystem, providing essential provisioning, regulatory, cultural, and supporting services. Saudi Arabia mangroves is also an important carbon sink and carbon rich, play its role in climate change mitigation and vital for biodiversity and marine life. The mangroves serve as a sanctuary for a myriad of waterfowl, fish, including commercially valuable shrimps, and serve as the breeding and spawning grounds for many fish population.

The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT), jointly organized a training workshop on 14 to 18 July 2024, for about 46 participants from 14 national stakeholders. These stakeholders include several departments of NCVC, Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) and relevant universities, focused on strengthening their capacity in developing a sustainable land management (SLM) framework in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The recent Food Policy Monitoring Bulletin highlights that inflation continues to ease in most regional countries. Still, it is persistent in some economies, such as Egypt, Lebanon, the Sudan and Yemen. In North Africa wheat yields are projected to be well below-average and, thus, increasing import requirements, while in the Near East, winter cereal production is expected to be above-average. 

Regional consultations on the review of the Second Global Plan of Action for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture  commenced in Kuwait. More than 50 participants from the Near East and North Africa region, including National Focal Points for Plant Genetic Resources to the  International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture and to the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, have met to discuss their priorities for the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources or food and agriculture.

The United Nations recognize that unsustainable food systems must be transformed to become more sustainable if the global community is to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The United Nations Agencies together with the private sector and other relevant stakeholders need to take a new approach in order to reach the SDGs targets.

The restoration of water for irrigation is always great news for farmers! It bears in mind that timely access to irrigation water is crucial for the productivity of agricultural systems, as it ensures a sustainable food supply, enables farmers to cultivate diverse crops and improve the quality of their produce, reduces poverty and improves the livelihoods of small-scale farmers, and, incredibly, enhances the environment’s resilience to climate change.
