The agriculture sectors of small island developing states are constrained by threats arising from both climate and disaster risk. Hurricanes, floods and droughts that have traditionally threatened agriculture now combine with new hazards such as rising sea level, increasing air and sea surface temperatures, ocean acidification and increasingly erratic rainfall patterns linked to climate change.

From reported water savings to practical implementation What drives decision-makers to change? - Farmers are interested in increasing their reliable income. - Extension agents are responsible for communicating research information to farmers. - Planners and policymakers are the priority target group for the ‘real water savings’ issue.

In partnership with the local agricultural extension authorities in Qazvin Province, the FAO provides its assistance to equip Iranian farmers in the Qazvin Irrigation Network with the requisite technical knowledge and skills to improve agriculture water productivity.

The SCALA programme will also focus on the department of Cundinamarca, which is hosted in the capital city of Bogota. The programme seeks to develop a model that allows internalizing national guidelines at the territorial level.

Sustainable water management is indispensable for climate-resilient growth and environmental integrity – unsustainable water management has devastating effects for people, economies and the environment. While agriculture is responsible for about 70% of global water withdrawals, agriculture will be an important part of the solution to solving the global water scarcity challenge.

The project was implemented to improve family farming production, quality of life and promote sustainable development through the efficient use of water and soil reserves in a high Andean community in the Plurinational State of Bolivia.

This is the project preparation phase, which is expected to run between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021, supported by GEF. The prepared project will support the national efforts to develop and implement Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) national targets through sustainable land management (SLM) leading to sustainable dryland agriculture and rangeland system management.

The Council of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) agreed to support FAO projects in Azerbaijan and Tajikistan worth a total of USD 12.5 million. These projects will contribute to achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically those on sustainable management of water (SDG 6) and life on land (SDG 15).

FAO is a participating partner with GEF in the Sustainability and Resilience for Food Security in Sub-Saharan Africa Integrated Approach Pilot, known as “the Food Security IAP”. The Food Security IAP comprises one cross-cutting regional hub project and 12 country-level projects.

The funds destined for Argentina were granted under the REDD + Results-Based Payments Pilot Program. Thanks to the fact that Argentina managed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in the 2014-2016 period by more than 165 million tons of CO2 equivalent, fighting deforestation in the regions of the Chaqueño Park, the Bolivian Tucuman Forest, the Espinal and the Misionera Forest.
