2026 update

On the occasion of the International Day of Zero Waste, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the World Food Programme (WFP), together with the Republic of Türkiye, marked the tenth anniversary of the Technical Platform on the Measurement and Reduction of Food Loss and Waste (TPFLW).

Agriculture remains the backbone of Rwanda’s Economy and the foundation of rural livelihoods. As the country is on the trajectory towards the vision 2050 ambition of becoming a high-income and climate-resilient nation, the sector continues to play a central role in food and nutrition security, employment, and broad-based social-economic development.

Quality statistics are key to informing decisions, policies and investments that address issues such as food security, malnutrition as well as sustainable and resilient agrifood systems. FAO, as part of its core mandate, is committed to collecting, analysing, interpreting and disseminating these statistics. 

Guidelines formulated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for the World Programme of Census of Agriculture in 2030 were endorsed on 6 March by the UN Statistical Commission at its 57th Session, elevating them to the status of an internationally agreed standard.
