Developing capacity to improve the governance of tenure
FAO supports countries in strengthening governance of tenure through practical and scalable solutions that translate global principles into concrete outcomes on the ground. Responding to demands from countries and regions, this work combines policy support, technical expertise and field engagement, operating at global, regional and national levels.
Through technical assistance and capacity development, support is provided for the review and implementation of land policies, legislation and institutional frameworks, as well as for strengthening land administration and management systems. Analytical work and knowledge development also contribute to evidence-based decision-making and to the dissemination of good practices on governance of tenure.
This work adopts a pragmatic, rights-based approach, engaging with existing tenure systems, bridging statutory and customary arrangements, and ensuring that no legitimate right holder is left behind.
This approach is guided by three core principles:

Aligning tenure governance with climate, biodiversity and long-term development goals.
