The first ICARRD, held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 2006, helped shape international commitments on equitable access to land, food security, and inclusive rural development.

FAO, together with relevant stakeholders and partners, and with financial support from the European Union, organized a technical thematic forum from 5 - 6 October 2017 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the VGGT. This forum was followed by a high-level event on 10 October 2017 where the outcome of the technical thematic forum was reported.

This year the 9th Capitalization Meeting was held virtually, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the challenging situation and the unusual format, about 40 participants from eleven countries - Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Malawi, Pakistan, Sudan, Eswatini and Uganda - participated in the three virtual sessions.

On 29 October 2019 a webinar explored how land-tenure challenges influence the adoption of agroforestry systems and how this fits in the larger framework of upscaling agroforestry. Following a general overview of the main tenure-related challenges, FAO tenure, forestry and agriculture experts shared concrete examples from the field.
