The Saint Petersburg Forestry Research Institute was founded in 1917 from the Forestry Department of the Agricultural Scientific Collegial Committee, led by M.E. Tkachenko, and became the State Forestry Research Institute (GosNIILH) in 1929. Over the years, scientists like V.N. Sukachev and V.V. Guman advanced forestry research. Today, the institute continues studying boreal forests in the Leningrad and Pskov regions and the Republic of Karelia, supported by the Russian Federal Forest Agency.
