Mountain Livestock Institute (IGM)
Spain
The Instituto de Ganadería de Montaña (IGM) is a joint centre owned by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of León (ULE), constituted in 2008 to obtain a critical mass of scientific personnel to address multidisciplinary projects in the area of livestock.
The mission of the IGM is to generate the scientific knowledge necessary to improve the sustainability of ruminant livestock farming through a multidisciplinary approach (i.e., including health, nutrition, production, etc.) that allows for the characterisation and valuation of both marketable and intangible services and goods (e.g., conservation of the environment and landscape) derived from livestock farming.
The centre's main functions are to develop research projects in areas related to animal nutrition, production and health, especially sheep, goats and cattle, and the relationship between livestock systems and land use, and to offer advice on these matters.
