Promoting the social acceptability of the aquaculture sector

Aquaculture is an important way to increase aquatic food production without exceeding the natural productivity of wild fish stocks, is a valuable source of jobs and a route for economic development in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The aquatic foods produced by the sector offer consumers a choice of healthy proteins that are a staple in the Mediterranean diet and can be used in a variety of traditional and modern recipes. However, these benefits are not always obvious to many in the region.

It is with this in mind that the GFCM is striving to improve the social acceptability of the sector. Within its 2030 Strategy for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, specifically Target 3, the GFCM sets out to improve the perception of the sector and increase awareness to ensure its competitiveness and resilience. This target also seeks to ensure that the sector is fair and inclusive by enhancing the opportunities available to small-scale farmers and by empowering women and youth.
