This policy brief is based on a recent technical report on the microeconomic and macroeconomic impact of nutrient and soil loss in Malawi. Econometric estimates were used to evaluate the impacts, differentiated by segments of the national population and geographical areas. In the same manner, the demonstration of mitigation effects by specific agricultural practices offers valuable information for the design of policy recommendations aimed at maximizing the farmers’ profit when facing increasing phenomena of land degradation. Soil loss is a major threat to agricultural development in Malawi, and the size of the agricultural sector in the Malawian economy renders it a major limitation to the overall economic development of the country. Soil loss reduces cultivable soil depth, but also takes away fertile soils from farmlands. The net effect is a loss of agricultural productivity, increased expenditure on fertilizers, and a general decline in profitability of crop production. PDF URL | FAO card
