FAO estimates that 30-40% of total food production is lost before it reaches the market.
Each year, the world loses or squanders a third of the food it produces. This means that somewhere between planting seeds in fields and providing nourishment to the world’s 7 billion people, approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food with a value of more than US$1 trillion is lost or wasted. These numbers are simply untenable in a world where, according to FAO, some 870 million people do not have enough to eat. Over thirty FAO staff participated in the intensive five-day training, including private sector focal points from technical divisions and representatives from the Office for Partnerships, Advocacy and Capacity Development (OPC). 22 UN agencies will bring the vision of a sustainable hunger-free world to Expo Milan
The United Nations and Expo 2015 signed an agreement today confirming the UN’s major support for Expo 2015, during which global attention will zero in on the challenge to eradicate hunger and poverty and on producing enough nutritious food for a world population expected to top 9 billion people by 2050.
