Strengthening Social Protection Systems in the Caribbean to Adapt to Climate Change: Opportunities and Challenges

Bridgetown (Barbados), 15/05/2024 - 16/05/2024

Background

The Regional Workshop "Strengthening Social Protection Systems in the Caribbean to Adapt to Climate Change: Opportunities and Challenges," co-organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), will take place on May 15 and 16, 2024, in Bridgetown, Barbados.

This event will bring together representatives from ministries of Social Development and Agriculture across the Caribbean region, as well as national and sub-regional experts from both organizations, to discuss how social protection can contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation and strengthen resilience against natural disasters.

Focusing on strengthening social protection systems to adapt to climate change, the event will pay special attention to key territories such as Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Jamaica (with funding from the World Bank), Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The workshop aims to integrate social protection as an essential component in the updating of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), share experiences, best practices, and explore opportunities for integrating the agendas of social protection, mitigation, adaptation, and climate change management.

Strategies to enhance coherence between social protection and climate change policies with government counterparts will be discussed, facilitating the exchange of experiences and the formulation of recommendations.
