FAO workshop: methodology to assess agricultural damage and loss

The workshop aims at presenting the methodology of assessing agricultural damages and losses to Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan).

The methodology has been developed under the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 2015) which aims to “ guide the multi-hazard management of the risk of all disasters.” The Framework covers disasters caused by different type of hazards, being natural and man-made, and other related hazards of environmental, technological and biological nature (e.g. transboundary animal and plant pest and diseases).

The Framework is structured around seven global targets and 38 indicators which were set to measure progress and determine global trends in the reduction of risk and losses.

Indicator C-2 specifically refers to direct economic loss in agriculture attributed to disasters, including crops, livestock, fisheries, apiculture, aquaculture and forest sectors as well as associated facilities and infrastructure, and FAO is custodian for it.

The role of the custodian is to create the conditions that would allow collection and analysis of data to measure the indicator.
