Inception Workshop on Carbon Sequestration through Climate Investment in Forests and Rangelands

Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), Hybrid Event, 11/04/2023

08.00 – 13.00 CET

On Tuesday 11 April FAO is organizing the launch of the FAO-GCF project “Carbon Sequestration through climate investment in forests and rangelands (CS-FOR) in the Kyrgyz Republic”.

The meeting will gather technical and policy experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Green Climate Fund (GCF), ministers from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision and Ministry of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic, Russian-Kyrgyz Development Fund (RKDF), the Community Development and Investment Agency (ARIS) and UN Representatives, who will share their expertise and information.

The launch event will introduce the project objectives, components, target beneficiaries, log frame, roles and responsibilities of FAO and the main project actors and discuss key issues and targets of the project.

Participants and stakeholders alike will be able to share feedback from the workshop on the project objectives and components, including emerging opportunities and challenges.

The goal of the CS-FOR project is to contribute to the development of a low carbon-emission and climate resilient economy, while capitalizing on important co-benefits from adaptation and disaster risk reduction. The project aims to lead to the sequestration of 19.8 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 20 years through reducing drivers of degradation and emissions via institutional support, participatory ecosystem-based sustainable management of natural resources and green growth investments.  These reductions represent 7.6 percent of the country’s total emissions, and 22.6 percent of the agricultural share of emissions.

The project will contribute to transforming the management of pasture and forest resources at the national and local levels to ecosystem-based sustainable natural resource management by enhancing an integrated and participatory approach, which is adaptive to climate change and responsive to the needs of local communities.

The meeting will be held in hybrid modality.  Russian will be the working language. Simultaneous translation for English and Kyrgyz will be provided.
