Région du Comité FAO/OMS de coordination pour l'Amérique du Nord et le Pacifique Sud-Ouest (CCNASWP) - Coordonnateur régional: Fidji

La dix-huitième session de la Commission du Codex Alimentariusqui s’est déroulée en 1989, est convenue de créer un Comité de coordination pour l’Amérique du Nord et le Pacifique Sud-Ouest, ce qui a permis de rassembler, selon les termes de la délégation néo-zélandaise, «des pays très éloignés […] qui ont beaucoup d’intérêts communs».

Le CCNASWP couvre une région extrêmement diversifiée. Il regroupe des économies avancées, comme les États-Unis d’Amérique, le Canada, l’Australie et la Nouvelle-Zélande, mais aussi 10 petits États insulaires. La plus grande de ces îles est la Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée (qui compte plus de 7 millions d’habitants) et les plus petits États sont les Îles Cook et Nauru, avec des populations avoisinant les 10 000 habitants.

Le coordonnateur régional opère au sein du Ministère fidjien de l’agriculture.

Les Fidji ont hâte de mettre les normes en application au niveau national et de soutenir tous les pays de la région, notamment les petites îles en plein développement, pour instaurer un cadre stratégique viable en matière de sécurité sanitaire des aliments. Ces initiatives appuieront les améliorations apportées dans le secteur de la santé publique, garantiront la sécurité sanitaire et la qualité attendue des aliments importés, et développeront l’accès aux marchés internationaux.

Le coordonnateur régional continuera de soutenir les travaux menés sur les normes régionales et il s’attachera globalement à intensifier la participation de la région au sein du Codex. Pour cela, il faudra continuer de développer les capacités nationales en renforçant le rôle des coordonnateurs et des Points de contact nationaux, et ainsi améliorer la participation aux travaux du Codex.

CCNASWP17 / Indigenous foods dominate a productive regional meeting

The 17th meeting of the FAO/WHO Coordinating Committee for North America and the South West Pacific (CCNASWP) has successfully concluded in Nadi, Fiji. The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CNR) celebrates Codex at 60 with style
