Consultations

Consultations, moderated by the FSN Forum with thematic facilitators, aim to capture the widest possible audience and provide a public platform for transparent and open sharing of ideas and information. They are launched to gather input for policy processes but can also be organized to collect feedback to help facilitators validate and support their technical work. Consultations usually take place over three to six weeks and are complemented with background materials that inform the exchange. For each consultation, a proceedings document containing all contributions received is made available on the Forum website. Forum members receive regular updates on the latest comments and feedback from the facilitator(s). The FSN Forum team then prepares an impartial, analytical summary of all contributions received. The results of the consultations generally feed into policy documents, such as CFS Voluntary Guidelines and global and regional policy frameworks related to the SDGs.

Preserving, strengthening and promoting Indigenous Peoples’ food and knowledge systems and traditional practices for sustainable food systems - HLPE-FSN consultation on the scope of the report

To respond to the CFS request, the HLPE-FSN will develop the report “Preserving, strengthening and promoting Indigenous Peoples’ food and knowledge systems and traditional practices for sustainable food systems” which will will provide recommendations to the CFS workstream. The results of this consultation will be used by the HLPE-FSN to elaborate the report to be presented at the 54th plenary session of the CFS in October 2026.

Building resilient food systems - HLPE-FSN consultation on the scope of the report

To respond to the CFS request, the HLPE-FSN will develop the report “Building resilient food systems”, which will provide recommendations to the CFS workstream of the same title under the focus area: “Fostering resilience of agriculture and food systems to shocks and stresses”. The HLPE-FSN has drafted the scope of the report and seek for the feedback from stakeholders. The results of this consultation will be used by the HLPE-FSN to elaborate the report to be presented at the 53rd plenary session of the CFS in October 2025.

Guidance on strengthening national science-policy interfaces for agrifood systems – Draft report

This e-consultation is organized by the FAO Chief Scientist Office. Aligned with the Science and Innovation Strategy, the FAO Chief Scientist Office has developed guidance for strengthening science-policy interfaces (SPIs) for agrifood systems at the national level. This document is meant to provide guidance to the individuals who produce and use evidence as well as the intermediaries who broker evidence in Member States and in partner organizations. It is targeted to SPIs that are focused on the transformation of agrifood systems (or some particular component of them) to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs, with a focus on the needs of low- and middle-income countries. The contributions and the results of this consultation will be used by the Chief Scientist Office to further elaborate and refine the draft guidance.

HLPE-FSN Report

Strengthening urban and peri-urban food systems to achieve food security and nutrition in the context of urbanization and rural transformation – V0 draft of the HLPE-FSN report #19

The e-consultation was organized in the context of the further development of the V0 draft report of the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE-FSN) of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), which then be submitted to peer review, before finalization and approval by the HLPE-FSN drafting team and the Steering Committee. The final report will be presented at CFS 52nd plenary session in October 2024 and provide recommendations to the CFS workstream.

Voluntary guidance tool for the sustainable enhancement of small-scale livestock productivity – Need, scope, nature, and development process

Based on the findings of the Global Survey, a FAO task force drafted the potential objectives, scope and nature, and process for the development of a dedicated voluntary guidance tool for the sustainable enhancement of small-scale livestock productivity. The outputs of this online consultation will contribute to the inclusive multistakeholder consultation process, requested by the COAG Sub-Committee on Livestock.

The current FAO Strategic Framework 2022-31 calls for transformative partnerships to contribute to achieving the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda’s aspiration of “Leaving No One Behind” and thus exploring a more strategic engagement with CSOs, capitalizing on the breadth and diversity of expertise and characteristics of CSOs. This online consultation aims to identify and understand the opportunities and challenges for better and more transformative engagement between FAO and with CSOs.

Food System Integrated Program

New Food System Integrated Program to support the transformation of food systems into nature-positive, resilient, and pollution free system

FAO and IFAD are developing a global Food Systems Integrated Program to support selected nations to catalyze the transformation to sustainable food systems that are nature-positive, resilient, and pollution-reduced. This Program will be funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and co-financed by countries, GEF agencies and other partners. The online consultation invites stakeholders to contribute to the Theory of Change and the Draft Results Framework for the Program, and to share their experiences on the relevant issues.

This consultation is requested by the FAO Chief Scientist Office and aims to further identify and understand the barriers and opportunities for scientists and other knowledge holdersThe results will inform work on the development of guidance for strengthening science-policy interfaces as well as science- and evidence-based policy processes for agrifood systems, helping to ensure that effective policy decisions are made based upon sufficient, relevant and credible science and evidence.
