International Course on Rights-based approach to food and nutrition security
The Food and Nutrition Security Training programme of the Centre for Development Innovation - Wageningen UR is pleased to announce the organisation of the
‘International Course on Rights-based approach to food and nutrition security, to be held in Wageningen, the Netherlands from 19 –30 January 2015’.
A fresh approach in addressing the problem of food and nutrition insecurity is the human rights-based framework. The right to food has been formally recognized since the adoption of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
This definition of the Right to Food has been further developed by FAO and is as follows: When every man, woman and child, alone or in community with others, has physical access and economic access at all times to adequate food or means for its procurement.
As a participant in this course you will gain insights about concepts and principles within the human rights-based approach, Right to Food, Food and Nutrition security and their interrelationships. The course will address different concepts used in the right to food approach. Participants will be provided tools on how to set-up lobbying and advocacy campaigns and how to develop an intervention using a rights-based approach to address food and nutrition insecurity.

1. Linking emergency aid to food and nutrition security, to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from November 3 - November 14, 2014.
2. Agriculture Nutrition Linkages, to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from November 24 – December 5 2014.
3. Rights-based approach to food and nutrition security, to be held in Wageningen, the Netherlands from 19 –30 January 2015.
Despite the world-wide increase of food availability, there are still around one billion people undernourished. This is far above of the target of MDG 1. There is now substantial evidence that malnutrition has life-long negative impacts on productivity and income-generating potential of the population.

CFS side event - Transforming food systems: empowering women to deliver on Food Security and Nutrition
The Gender in Agriculture Partnership (GAP) is organizing a side event on “Transforming food systems: empowering women to deliver on Food Security and Nutrition” in the context of the CFS 40 on Thursday October 10th, 2013 between 12:30 and 14:00.

The event will discuss:
- The evidence showing how women’s and girls’ empowerment delivers on these outcomes
- The costs of failing to invest in women's roles in high-nutrient-value food chains and of ignoring women's triple work burden (household, reproductive and market)
- The enabling environment - policies, rights, laws and incentives to empower women in food systems to deliver food security and nutrition
Prof. MS Swaminathan, Chair of the HLPE of the CFS, and also a GAP Patron will chair the side event and HE Mary Mubi, Ambassador of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Co-Chair of the Women’s Network of Ambassadors to FAO will make remarks.

New course: Linking emergency aid to food and nutrition security 15 – 26 April, 2013 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Wageningen UR-Centre for Development Innovation is organising a new course on Linking Emergency Aid to Food and Nutrition Security. The course offers participants a chance to gain insight in the inter-disciplinary and integrated nature of food and nutrition security in an emergency setting, in particular the role of stakeholders, institutions, and innovative governance/donor interventions to build resilience. In addition, it stimulates participants to consider their own role as manager, policy maker or practitioner, making use of a wide range of principles and tools, to strengthen their interventions to make the transition from emergency towards food and nutrition security.
Scaling Up Nutrition: Strengthening Institutional Capacity
U.S. leadership in the global movement to scale up nutrition has led to increased investments in U.S. health, food security, and nutrition programs.
We need to assess nutrition resources available to U.S. Government agencies, to implementing partners, and to country governments and civil society. Do they have sufficient technical capacity in nutrition to “scale up” programs? How well-equipped is the U.S. government to support country-led efforts and help sustain their momentum and progress? How can we further build our capacity?
An approach to nutrition that crosses government departments, bureaus, and offices will help strengthen U.S. programs and use our nutrition dollars as effectively as possible. Strengthened leadership and capacity helps ensure better coodination and accountability for results. Harmonized program strategy, budgets, guidance on implementation, and implementation on the ground will maximize the impact of our work on the critical problem of global malnutrition.

International Winter School and Forum on Contemporary Agri-food Issues
The Marie Curie Initial Training Network PUREFOOD1 project team will host a winter school and forum in Barcelona from 12-22 November. The forum will be a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary event, with the joint participation of the PUREFOOD research fellows and supervisory team, a diverse group of external Ph.D. students, and respected local and international scholars and practitioners. The forum will create an atmosphere of debate, exchange, and collaboration. The academic program will feature three distinct learning modes – expert-led discussions, peer-led paper review, and thematically integrated site visits – and will include modules oriented to some of the most prominent themes in agri-food system scholarship today.
UOC/FAO University Specialization in Impact Assessment
The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya's (UOC) Department of Food Systems, Culture and Society and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are partnering to offer a fully accredited, online certificate entitled: “Assessing Impact of Development Programmes on Food Security” starting 24 October 2012. This 4 month joint online UOC/FAO Specialization provides a comprehensive understanding and guidance for assessing the impact of development programmes on food security.
