At the end of October the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Civil Society Network, in collaboration with SUN Alliance Rwanda and PROCASUR Corporation, launched the first international Learning Route exchange programme in Rwanda. This six day peer-to-peer learning exchange brought together alliances from 9 African countries to learn from innovations being used by stakeholders in Rwanda including civil society to scale up nutrition. The Learning Route focused on key areas of intervention including multi stakeholder coordination, communication for behavioural change, social mobilisation, value chains and decentralisation. As result of the LR exchange, each Alliance submitted an “Innovation Plan”.

Central Asia Climate Smart Agriculture Workshop

In Bishkek, the Kyrgyz Republic will host the Workshop on Climate Smart Agriculture (12.07 – 14.07.2016), the participants of which will be representatives of the Central Asian countries - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The Workshop will address the interlinked challenges of food security, climate change, energy and disaster risk reduction (DRR) through an integrated climate smart agriculture (CSA) approach.

FSN Forum strategy planning workshop: Linking practice and innovation to policy through online consultations

A two-day, face-to-face workshop, involving key FSN Forum members and FAO colleagues active in knowledge sharing was held in Rome (Italy) on 12-13 December 2013. The purpose was to allow for a constructive exchange of ideas aimed at gathering inputs for the continuous development of the Forum in general and for the upcoming medium term strategy in particular.

“What’s In a Name" an international webinar on different approaches to help people eat better

This two-hour webinar aims to reduce global misunderstanding about what we call the work we do. It will consist of short presentations of different approaches to help people eat better: Behaviour Change, Social Marketing, (Food and) Nutrition Education, and Health Promotion. Each presentation will define one approach, describe its essential processes, differentiate it from other approaches, and list its key elements and principles. The audience will initially complete a mini-survey, and will comment, question, discuss and vote during the webinar. They will also say if they would like further discussion to expand the concepts, debate their value, and move towards an integrated model. This webinar does not aim to instruct the world on nutrition education principles and processes, but to agree in outline on what is meant by the terms, distinguish between the approaches, identify common processes and values and hence strengthen the professional community by building shared concepts and clearing the ground for further discussion of impact and value.

E-learning course on Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) - version 2.0

The new free course offers a comprehensive yet readily accessible source of guidance on using the IPC four functions and related tools and procedures specifically focused on acute food insecurity.

The course consists of 11 lessons, of approximately 15 to 150 minutes duration each, and it is based on the IPC technical Manual version 2.0, which was originally published in 2012. It is self-paced learning and uses a variety of learning methods to get to grips with each topic: storytelling, illustrative case studies, interactive self-assessment tests and practice exercises. The course also includes glossary, background readings and relevant online resources.

The course has been developed in the framework of IPC Certification Programme which consists of three certification levels. The course is not a certification requirement but will help undertake the IPC Level 1 Test that is one of the key requirements to get the Level 1 IPC Analyst Certificate. A direct link to the IPC Level 1 Test is included in this course platform.

The course is currently available in English. French and Spanish versions are under development.

The IPC Global Partnership thanks FAO, in particular the Capacity Development Unit of Office for Partnerships, Advocacy and Capacity Development. FAO, in its position as IPC Global Partner, has developed the full course and made it free on its e-learning centre as part of the "Improved Global Governance for Hunger Reduction Programme”, which is funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by FAO.

There is now substantial evidence that malnutrition has life-long negative impacts on productivity and income-generating potential of the population.

This conference is addressed to high-level experts in the field of humanitarian action, as well as of energy, food security and nutrition. The “Sustainable Energy Technologies for Food Utilization” (SET4food) is a project co-funded by COOPI-Cooperazione Internazionale, Politecnico di Milano, Fondazione Politecnico and the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department (ECHO).

The specific objective of the project is to enhance the response capacity of humanitarian actors in identifying and implementing efficient and sustainable energy technologies for food utilization. The project takes into account the combination of food utilization and energy availability in formal and informal settlements for refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs). Practical tools to improve food utilization have been developed, and in particular: i) a decision support system (DSS) to facilitate the identification of the most appropriate energy technologies for a certain context; ii) guidelines of energy technologies for food utilization. Then pilot projects in Somalia, Central African Republic, Lebanon and Haiti have been implemented, in order to test the DSS, as well as innovative solutions. Finally, a set of in-presence trainings and public events have been raising the attention and improving the response capacity of humanitarian actors.

Promoting women’s participation and leadership in producers’ organizations

Open online discussion hosted by FAO's TECA platform.

The objectives of this discussion are:

  • To share experiences of POs dealing with women's inclusion, participation and leadership issues
  • To share successful experiences of women's participation and leadership in POs and cooperatives
  • To understand better issues faced by women producers in POs and cooperatives
  • To identify ways of strengthening women's participation and leadership within POs 

This discussion will start on Monday 23th June and last until 27th July, 2013.
