This 2023 special edition of The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries updates statistics on fisheries and includes, for the first time, regional indicators on the aquaculture sector.
The report highlights that the share of overexploited stocks fell from 73 percent in 2020 to 58 percent in 2021, representing the lowest rate in a decade, alongside a 31 percent reduction in fishing pressure since 2012. At the same time, aquaculture production has increased by over 90 percent over the past decade, strengthening its role in food security and livelihoods.
