Locust Watch in Caucasus and Central Asia

General situation during May 2026

Moroccan locust (DMA) hopper development was almost completed in Central Asia (CA); mass fledging and mating started, as well as egg-laying in the southern areas. DMA hatching was observed, followed by hopper development, in Azerbaijan, Georgia and the Russian Federation. DMA situation in May was classified as a threat by all CA countries and as calm in Caucasus and the Russian Federation. Italian locust (CIT) hatching continued in Kazakhstan and started in other affected Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) countries, followed by hopper development. The situation was classified as a threat in the Central Asian countries where it is present, and a calm in Caucasus and in the Russian Federation. Migratory locust (LMI) hatching started in Kazakhstan and in the Russian Federation.

General Situation during May 2016 Forecast until mid-July 2016 Moroccan Locust (DMA) populations reached the adult stage in most Central Asian (CA) countries; hopper development was in progress in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Russia. Italian Locust (CIT) hopper development was in progress in Georgia and in four Central Asian countries, namely Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Uzbekistan and fledging started in Tajikistan.

General Situation during June 2016 Forecast until mid-August 2016 Moroccan Locust (DMA) adult stage was reached in all Central Asian (CA) countries as well as in Azerbaijan. Italian Locust (CIT) hopper development was coming to an end in Georgia and Russia while fledging started in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan and mating was in progress in Tajikistan. Migratory Locust (LMI) hopper development continued in Kazakhstan and Russia while fledging probably started in Uzbekistan.

General Situation during April 2016 Forecast until mid-June 2016 Moroccan Locust (DMA) hopper development was in progress in Azerbaijan and in all Central Asian (CA) countries, except in Turkmenistan where fledging had already occurred. Italian Locust (CIT) hatching started in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. So far, no Asian Migratory Locust (LMI) hatching was reported. During the forecast period, DMA life cycle will come to an end in most of the CA countries.
