General situation during July 2026
Moroccan Locust (DMA) natural cycle has been completed in all remaining parts of Central Asian (CA) countries at the end of the reporting period. In Azerbaijan, Georgia and the Russian Federation, DMA mating and egg-laying started. Italian Locust (CIT) die off occurred in southern Central Asia, with mating and egg-laying progressing in other parts. Fledging began in Caucasus and the Russian Federation. Asian Migratory Locust (LMI) fledging and mating started in Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation. Summer surveys of hoppers and adults (on egg-laying sites) continued in most countries. In July, control operations covered 682 762 hectares (ha) in all Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) countries.

Moroccan locust (DMA) hatching was completed in all Central Asian (CA) countries and hopper development continued in April, with fledging starting in some southern parts. Hatching was recorded in Azerbaijan at the end of the reporting period. Italian locust (CIT) hatching started in southern Kazakhstan at the end of the month. Asian Migratory locust (LMI) hatching has not been observed so far.

Moroccan locust (DMA) hatching started in Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. No hatching of DMA or other species was reported elsewhere. DMA mass hatching will start in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation, as well as in Azerbaijan and Georgia. Italian locust (CIT) hatching will start in the southern Central Asian (CA) countries at the end of the forecast period. Asian migratory locust (LMI) hatching is not expected in April.

General situation from November 2025 till February 2026 Forecast for March 2026 Following the three locust species — the Moroccan Locust (DMA), Italian Locust (CIT), and Asian Migratory Locust (LMI) — life cycles completion from mid-summer to early autumn 2025 in Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA), eggs remain in the soil in a state of embryonic diapause. Hatching of DMA could begin in early March in the southern parts of Central Asia, in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
