Locust Watch in Caucasus and Central Asia

General situation during July 2026

Moroccan Locust (DMA) natural cycle has been completed in all remaining parts of Central Asian (CA) countries at the end of the reporting period. In Azerbaijan, Georgia and the Russian Federation, DMA mating and egg-laying started. Italian Locust (CIT) die off occurred in southern Central Asia, with mating and egg-laying progressing in other parts. Fledging began in Caucasus and the Russian Federation. Asian Migratory Locust (LMI) fledging and mating started in Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation. Summer surveys of hoppers and adults (on egg-laying sites) continued in most countries. In July, control operations covered 682 762 hectares (ha) in all Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) countries.

General situation during March 2023 Forecast for April 2023 Moroccan Locust (DMA) hatching started in Tajikistan earlier than in other countries, in the beginning of March. First DMA hatching in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan was recorded during the second decade of March and in Turkestan region of Kazakhstan at the end of month. During the forecast period, DMA hopper development will continue in the above countries and Afghanistan, while hatching will begin in Zhambyl region of Kazakhstan.

General Situation during June 2022 Forecast for July 2022 Moroccan Locust (DMA) lifecycle came to an end in southern parts of Central Asia (CA), while fledging, mating and egg-laying continued in Caucasus and other parts of CA. Italian Locust (CIT) fledging started in CA countries, and its hopper development continued in Caucasus and the Russian Federation. Migratory Locust (LMI) hopper development continued in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russian Federation and Uzbekistan.

General Situation during April 2022, Forecast for May 2022 Moroccan Locust (DMA) hatching and hopper development was in progress in all Central Asian (CA) countries and in Azerbaijan. No report on the Italian Locust (CIT) hatching was received during the reporting period. During the forecast period, DMA hatching will start in Georgia and the Russian Federation and fledging and mating will occur in the southern CA countries.
