Markets and Trade

About our work

The FAO Markets and Trade Division collects, analyses and disseminates information on the rice market. The division regularly publishes comprehensive rice market intelligence reports and short-term forecasts of supply, demand, trade, stocks and prices, alongside topical analyses and information on policy developments.

In addition, the division services the Intergovernmental Group on Rice that provides a forum for intergovernmental consultation and exchange on rice production, consumption, trade and price trends. The group also regularly appraises the global rice market situation and short-term outlook.

The FAO Food Price Index (FFPI) is a measure of the monthly change in international prices of a basket of food commodities. It consists of the average of five commodity group price indices weighted by the average export shares of each of the groups over 2014-2016. A feature article published in the June 2020 edition of the Food Outlook presents the revision of the base period for the calculation of the FFPI and the expansion of its price coverage, to be introduced from July 2020.

Movements in agricultural commodity and food prices are indicators of changes in the fundamentals of supply and demand. As such, their levels are indicative of market imbalances that, for example, can portend to worsening food security. The timely monitoring of prices is also important for assessing the functioning and efficiency of international and national markets. Transparent and timely market information is a basis for evidence-based decision making and food security strategies.
