Markets and Trade

About our work

The FAO Markets and Trade Division collects, analyses and disseminates information on the meat market. The division regularly publishes comprehensive meat market intelligence reports and short-term forecasts of supply, demand, trade, stocks and prices, alongside topical analyses and information on policy developments. In addition, the division services the Intergovernmental Group on Meat and Dairy Products that provides a forum for intergovernmental consultation and exchange on meat production, consumption, trade and price trends. The group also regularly appraises the global market situation and short-term outlook.

01/12/2025

The review finds that global meat production is projected to rise in 2025, driven primarily by poultry output expansion supported by lower feed costs. Strong import demand, especially for bovine meat, continues to underpin international trade flows. At the same time, robust global demand, constrained export availabilities, and heightened market uncertainty have sustained upward pressure on meat prices worldwide.

Price monitoring:

02/02/2024

The FAO Food Price Index (FFPI) is a measure of the monthly change in international prices of a basket of food commodities. It consists of the average of five commodity group price indices weighted by the average export shares of each of the groups over 2014-2016. A feature article published in the June 2020 edition of the Food Outlook presents the revision of the base period for the calculation of the FFPI and the expansion of its price coverage, to be introduced from July 2020.

Movements in agricultural commodity and food prices are indicators of changes in the fundamentals of supply and demand. As such, their levels are indicative of market imbalances that, for example, can portend to worsening food security. The timely monitoring of prices is also important for assessing the functioning and efficiency of international and national markets. Transparent and timely market information is a basis for evidence-based decision making and food security strategies.

Policy monitoring:

This third staple food policy review indicates the main policy changes that took place in 2003 and 2004 in the areas of production, consumption, marketing and trade of grains, oilseeds and oil. breeding. The data come from questionnaires and from official and unofficial sources.

This is the second issue of the Review of basic food policies, which covers policy developments in production, consumption marketing and trade of cereals, oilseeds and livestock products during the period 2001-2002. The policy information contained in the report is taken from country responses to FAO questionnaires and from publicly available sources.
