Environmental shocks and stresses have significant negative effects on all aspects of social and economic wellbeing. These negative effects are more immediately apparent in the agricultural sector. Extreme variations in the weather not only directly impact agricultural production, but there are also adverse effects on livelihoods, especially in rural agricultural/fisheries-dependent communities.

What should we be eating? Is there one right answer? Is it as simple as choosing to eat well? Food must be nutritious for us to grow, work and thrive. Is it? Hardly. Current agrifood systems are failing us. What we eat was historically rooted in a place, a soil, a culture; it would reflect understandings of self and community, of heritage and values. Yet this is ever less the case. Dietary diversity is being lost.

The rural multidimensional poverty index applied to Small Islands Developing States

The rural multidimensional poverty index (R-MPI) fills an important research gap on accurate poverty measurement. This paper presents the technical summary and country results of the first application of the R-MPI to two Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) in the Pacific Community, Kiribati and the Marshall Islands.
