Joint workshop: innovative techniques on integrated fire management in the Mediterranean region

Join us for a key international workshop organized by the Directorate-General of Forests of Türkiye, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Türkiye, the Directorate-General of Biodiversity, Forest and Desertification of Spain, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenges of Spain, and the FAO Committee on Mediterranean Forestry Questions – Silva Mediterranea. This event will focus on Innovative techniques on integrated fire management in the Mediterranean region and is set to take place in Antalya, Türkiye.
Wildfires pose a significant and growing threat to forest landscapes worldwide, particularly in Mediterranean and fire-prone regions. Climate change, land-use changes and human activities have intensified fire frequency and severity, leading to devastating environmental, economic and social impacts. To address these challenges, innovative approaches to fire prevention, management and post-fire restoration are crucial for enhancing the resilience of forest ecosystems. This international joint workshop brings together experts, policymakers, researchers and practitioners to discuss and promote strategies for fire-resistant and fire-resilient forest landscapes. Organized under the framework of the working group of forest fires of Silva Mediterranea, the event provides a platform for knowledge exchange, best practices and future collaborations.
The primary objectives of this workshop are:
- Strengthening fire-resistant and fire-resilient landscapes-discuss innovative approaches through management, planning and restoration techniques.
- Exploring advanced technologies in integrated fire management-showcase cutting-edge innovations, tools and methodologies that enhance wildfire prevention, detection and suppression.
- Improving wildfire analysis and modeling-enhance understanding of fire behavior, spread and risk assessment through advanced modeling and data analysis.
- Promoting community-based fire management and awareness programs-highlight the importance of local engagement, through awareness programs and capacity-building initiatives to mitigate fire risks and be better prepared.
- Advancing post-fire restoration strategies-share best practices and experiences in rehabilitating and restoring landscapes after wildfires to ensure ecosystem recovery and sustainability.
- Facilitating regional and international collaboration-strengthen cooperation among stakeholders, including policymakers, scientists and forestry practitioners to develop coordinated strategies for fire management.
- Strategic planning for future action–discuss and approve the work plan of the FAO Silva Mediterranea working group on forest fires for the next four years (2025-2028) to ensure effective follow-up and implementation of key recommendations.
The workshop will be held in English and Turkish, with simultaneous translation.
