Based on a bioclimatic definition of Mediterranean forests, the Mediterranean region includes more than 25 million hectares of
forests and about 50 million hectares of other wooded lands. As an integral part of Mediterranean landscapes, these forests
and woodlands are a source of energy, water, food, tourism, income, and many more goods and services.
The Committee of Mediterranean Forestry Questions - Silva Mediterranea is a Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (FAO) statutory body.
Its role is to insert Mediterranean forest questions into a participatory process, acting as a catalyst for their management,
proposing related calls for action and addressing its five working groups’ activities on timely and emerging forest topics.
