Origin

Established by the Conference at its Sixteenth Session (1971, Resolution 10/71) as a Committee of the Council.

Rules of Procedure

Adopted at the Second Session (1974) and amended at the Third (1976) and Twentieth (2010) Sessions.

Purpose

The terms of reference of the Committee as laid down in Rule XXXI of the General Rules of the Organization include the following:

  • Conduct periodic reviews of international forestry problems and appraise these problems with a view to proposing concerted action to be undertaken by Member Nations and the Organization in their resolution;
  • Review the work programmes of the Organization in the field of forestry and their implementation;
  • Advise the Director-General on the future work programmes of the Organization in the field of forestry and on their implementation;
  • Review specific matters relating to forestry referred to the Committee by the Council or the Director-General, or placed by the Committee on its agenda at the request of a Member Nation in accordance with the rules of procedure of the Committee, and make recommendations as may be appropriate;
  • Report to the Council and tender advice to the Director-General, as appropriate, on matters considered by the Committee.

Membership Open to all Members which notify the Director-General in writing of their desire to become Members of the Committee and of their intention to participate in its work. The notification may be made at any time but not later than 10 days before the opening date of a session. Membership acquired on this basis shall be considered valid unless the Member has not been represented at two consecutive sessions of the Committee, or has notified its withdrawal from it.
