FAO and the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS)renewed their partnership on 27 October 2023, a further sign of their mutual commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since the first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the institutions was signed in 2014, it has been subsequently renewed twice, a strong demonstration of the success of the collaboration.

JIRCAS and FAO share a common vision to put forth solutions to global challenges surrounding food and the environment, as well as to contribute to the stable supply of agricultural, forestry and fishery products and resources. These objectives align with FAO’s Strategic Framework 2022-2031 and its vision for better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life – leaving no one behind.

As a research centre, JIRCAS undertakes experimental studies into the technological advancement of agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related industries in tropical/subtropical zones and developing regions. By collaborating with FAO, JIRCAS can enhance its local reach and better apply its research outcomes on the ground.

Speaking of the partnership with FAO, the President of JIRCAS, Osamu Koyama, said, “There has never been a time when the role of science, technology and innovation in the international community has attracted more attention than it does today, and we look forward to further multi-layered cooperation between FAO and JIRCAS that leverages each other's experience to create complementary and synergistic effects. We strongly hope that the updated MoU will provide more practical solutions to the complex problems of future global food system transformation.”

By renewing the MoU, FAO and JIRCAS will continue to join forces for the next three years to promote international research through the exchange of scientists and researchers within governments and among key organizations, with a marked local presence; and to collect, analyze and disseminate information for the early recognition of significant trends in agriculture, forestry and fisheries; as well as organizing international symposiums and workshops.

The partnership work plan, which is currently under development, will focus on priority activities for both partners, including:
