Objective / Goal

Main objective:

The project aimed to strengthen the capacity of six target countries to scale up Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) by improving cross-sectoral coordination, legal and policy frameworks, and governance processes (including tenure, participation, and national financing instruments).

Specific objectives in Fiji:

  • Contribute to reducing emissions through facilitating sectoral policy reforms and creating enabling environments for increased productivity across agricultural and forestry lands.

  • Achieve emissions reduction targets, including a conditional 30% reduction with international support, as pledged in its INDC.

  • Better estimate the potential of Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) options within Fiji’s REDD+ program, aligning with its climate commitments.

Activities

The following are some key activities implemented in Fiji:

  • Developed a Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) policy and strategy aligned with national initiatives such as the Fiji Green Growth Framework.

  • Enhanced national capacity building on key FLR and land use planning approaches.

  • Coordinated with local stakeholders for effective implementation of FLR initiatives and the development of pilot restoration plans in the Yasawa and Mamanuca regions.

  • Conducted monitoring using Collect Earth Open Foris for the maintenance and assessment of restored and replanted areas.

  • Organized the Pacific Week of Agriculture and Forestry (PWAF) in Nadi, Fiji, with a session focusing on FLR practices and resilience.

  • Organized five inception workshops and four national capacity-building events or technical days.

  • Conducted a hybrid workshop on green/climate finance in the Pacific, combining face-to-face and online sessions.

Impact
  • The project targets a reduction of 1 285 630 tCO₂e in GHG emissions by 2038. As of the most recent reporting period, the cumulative reduction achieved is 185 702 tCO₂e.

  • It seeks the direct restoration of 5 000 hectares of degraded forests and landscapes. As of the most recent reporting period, a total of 5 450 hectares has been restored.

  • It aims to establish or improve 17 institutionalized structures or processes to address climate change and conserve biodiversity.

In Fiji:

  • Restored 400 hectares in Fiji, with 240 hectares in the Yasawa Islands and 160 hectares in the Mamanuca Islands, including 114 hectares completed in the first round.

  • Supported income generation through seedling distribution to local stakeholders and materials for beekeepers.

  • Advanced four national policy frameworks and work plans.
