Since its establishment in 2014, the FLRM has played a leading role in Forest and Landscape Restoration at the global, regional and national levels with financial support from the Republic of Korea.

Through its different funding cycles (6, 7 and 8), the GEF has contributed to different FLRM projects and initiatives. 

 

GEF 6 (2014-2018): Strengthened focus on sustainable forest management, climate resilience and integrated approaches. 

Project: The Restoration Initiative (TRI)

IKI and BMUKey FLRM projects have been funded through the IKI-BMU initiative since 2018.

Project: The Alliance for Restoration of Forest Ecosystems in Africa (AREECA)

The SIDA provided key support to the Implementation of the FLRM through funding.

The Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration focused on the World Restoration Flagships supported by the FLRM.

The FFEM contributed to the FLRM through the funding of a key project for the Sahel region. 

 

Project: Restoration for Forest and Landscape and Sustainable Land Management in the Sahel

  • Countries: Burkina Faso, Niger
  • Budget: EUR 1.8 million
  • Period: 2018-2024

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) plays a key role in the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100). It funds the FAO-led AFR100 programme with the objective to restore degraded landscapes. This programme focuses on empowering local communities, smallholder forest and farm producer organizations as well as Indigenous Peoples by providing direct financial and technical assistance. BMZ therefore supports AFR100's overarching goal of restoring 100 million hectares of degraded land across Africa by 2030.

 

Project: “Access to funding and technical assistance for forest and smallholder farm producers and enterprises to accelerate restoration-based value-added innovation, with a focus on Africa” as part of the “African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100) programme"

The Flexible Multi-Partner Mechanism (FMM) is FAO's main pooled funding mechanism for flexible voluntary contributions from resource partners.  The FMM has been instrumental in supporting various initiatives, including funding for FLRM projects in two phases (2023-2024 and 2024-2025).
