Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism

Forest Kids Game

Forest Kids is an educational video game designed to teach children about the importance of forests for life on Earth. The game features engaging mini-games that can be used both in educational settings and at home. Forest Kids is available free of charge in six languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish and Russian.

The game is continuously being improved and updated. On 1 October 2025, a new module focused on restoration was introduced. In this module, players begin with a degraded landscape and earn stars to restore native trees, plants and animals. Each restoration decision helps players understand biodiversity, climate and the vital role of forests. The game design promotes teamwork and problem-solving, reinforcing the idea that successful restoration is a shared responsibility.

The module introduces players to restoring biome-specific forests, reintroducing native species and understanding the practical steps needed to rehabilitate degraded ecosystems. By simulating real-world restoration actions, the game raises awareness about ecological recovery and biodiversity conservation.

The activity was developed under Initiative 2 of the Capacity, Knowledge and Learning Action Plan (CKLAP) of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030), which aims to strengthen youth learning and engagement in ecosystem restoration.

On 17 October 2025, nearly 1 000 students aged 9 to 14 participated in Junior World Food Day at FAO headquarters took part in an interactive Discovery Station showcasing the restoration module of the Forest Kids game. The game can be played online and is also available on the App Store and Google Play.

The game guides children on an expedition around the world and invites the virtual travellers to explore four types of forest – boreal, tropical, temperate and arid – while spotting flora and fauna, matching pairs of animals within their biomes and sorting non-wood forest products as they go.

Colour with Forest Kids

The Forest Kids colouring booklet was created to further engage children in discovering forests and biodiversity by personalizing the forests, flora and fauna featured in the video game, as well as to learn age-accessible facts about the four featured biomes (arid, boreal, temperate and tropical). Use your imagination to bring forests to life with the Forest Kids colouring booklet!
