Annual deforestation now exceeds 160 000 ha, driven by crops like coffee, cocoa and palm oil, with 8–9 million ha already lost. About 8 million ha could be restored. Agroforestry traditions persist in the Andes, while the coast has lost 300 000 ha to salinization from rice cultivation.
