Developing sustainable solutions to preserve ecosystems and transform food systems

Background and challenges

Faced with the effects of climate change, the erosion of biodiversity and growing pressure on natural resources, Morocco is committed to developing sustainable and innovative solutions to preserve its ecosystems and transform its food systems.

The ecological transition cannot be achieved without sustainable resource management, the promotion of healthy, sustainable diets, and coordinated support for national players to strengthen the resilience of food systems at all levels, from national to local.

Priority objectives

  • Develop and implement innovative solutions for the conservation of ecosystems, the sustainable management of natural resources and the transformation of food systems.
  • Supporting the resilience and sustainability of food systems in the face of climatic, economic and health shocks.
  • Encourage integrated approaches to reduce loss and waste, promote healthy diets, and diversify production and consumption patterns.
  • Strengthen national capacities for coordinating, monitoring and evaluating impacts on food security.
  • Support the harmonization of public policies and the adoption of food quality and traceability standards.
  • Promote the "One Health" approach to integrated management of human, animal and environmental health risks.

Focus areas

  • Support for policy dialogue and national coordination on transforming food systems.
  • Set up a unit to monitor and implement the national strategy resulting from the United Nations Summit on Food Systems.
  • Support for innovative actions at local level: reducing loss and waste, diversifying production, promoting healthy diets, urban agriculture and sustainable cities.
  • Promoting short circuits, local production and direct sales to reduce the ecological footprint and strengthen community food security.
  • Building capacity to analyze the impact of crises on food security and setting up a national monitoring platform.
  • Technical support to implement the One Health approach and improve management of growing health risks.
  • Contributing to the adoption of international standards for food quality, certification and traceability in a competitive environment.

Expected results

  • CCDD Output 1.2: Innovative solutions developed for ecological transition, biodiversity conservation, transformation of food systems, and sustainable management of natural resources, taking into account the effects of climate change.
  • FAO output 1.2: National stakeholders are supported to strengthen the resilience and sustainability of food systems.
