Climate-smart policies to enhance Egypt's agrifood system performance and sustainability

FAO Syria Acting Representative’s statement on World Water Day
On World Water Day, the FAO Acting Representative in the Syrian Arab Republic stresses on the importance to restore water for irrigation as a key element for agriculture and food production. Thousands of rural families depend on agriculture as the main source of income and livelihood. A large percentage of these families lack access to irrigation water to cultivate profitable crops around the year.
The restoration of irrigation presents an opportunity to achieve a cascade of benefits for rural communities. It is a chance to introduce sustainable and resources solutions to enhance the social cohesion, increase employment and income rates for rural families as a result of a better production status (crops and livestock), as well as expanding the amount of irrigated and cultivated areas.
