La région du Proche-Orient et de l’Afrique du Nord (NENA) joue un rôle pivot lors de la 27e session du Comité des forêts (COFO 27), qui a débuté aujourd’hui au siège de la FAO. Co-organisée avec la 9e Semaine mondiale des forêts, cette session constitue une occasion significative pour les stratégies forestières mondiales. Des représentants de haut niveau, des responsables de services forestiers et des officiels gouvernementaux se sont réunis pour définir la trajectoire future des politiques forestières et des progrès techniques.

Le récent bulletin de suivi des politiques alimentaires souligne que l’inflation continue de diminuer dans la plupart des pays de la région. Toutefois, elle persiste dans certaines économies, notamment en Égypte, au Liban, au Soudan et au Yémen. En Afrique du Nord, les rendements de blé devraient être nettement inférieurs à la moyenne, augmentant ainsi les besoins en importations, alors qu’au Proche-Orient, la production de céréales d’hiver devrait être supérieure à la moyenne.

Les consultations régionales pour l'examen du deuxième Plan d'action mondial pour les ressources phytogénétiques pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture ont été lancées au Koweït, le 9 juillet 2024. Plus de 50 participants de la région du Proche-Orient et de l'Afrique du Nord, dont les points focaux nationaux pour les ressources phytogénétiques du Traité international sur les ressources phytogénétiques pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture et de la Commission des ressources génétiques pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture, se sont réunis pour discuter des priorités en matière de conservation et d'utilisation durable des ressources phytogénétiques pour l'alimentation et l’agriculture.

The United Nations recognize that unsustainable food systems must be transformed to become more sustainable if the global community is to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The United Nations Agencies together with the private sector and other relevant stakeholders need to take a new approach in order to reach the SDGs targets.

It bears in mind that timely access to irrigation water is crucial for the productivity of agricultural systems, as it ensures a sustainable food supply, enables farmers to cultivate diverse crops and improve the quality of their produce, reduces poverty and improves the livelihoods of small-scale farmers, and, incredibly, enhances the environment’s resilience to climate change.

The United Arab Emirates has signed a key agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and prevent the imminent risk of famine. The agreement was signed on behalf of the UAE by His Excellency Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister for International Development Affairs, and on behalf of FAO by, Guangzhou Qu, Director of the FAO Liaison Office in New York, at a special ceremony in New York at the UAE Mission to the UN in New York, and in the presence of Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.
