The overall objective of the Project is to scale up integrated natural resources management (INRM) in drought prone and salt affected agricultural production landscapes in the Central Asian countries and Turkey.

This Working Paper describes the result of a pilot project in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia on the development of gender-sensitive indicators related to the role of women in agricultural water management.

Functional soils play a key role in the supply of clean water and resilience to floods and droughts. Water infiltration through soil traps pollutants and prevents them from leaching into the groundwater. Moreover, the soil captures and stores water, making it available for absorption by crops, and thus minimizing surface evaporation and maximizing water use efficiency and productivity

The project objective is to improve sustainability of agriculture and forests land use management through diffusion and adoption of low-carbon technologies with win-win benefits in land degradation, climate change and biodiversity conservation and increase farm profitability and forest productivity.

Water investment policies must be designed appropriately and targeted to areas where water interventions have the highest potential to contribute to improved livelihoods and alleviation of rural poverty. But water plays a key role in multiple aspects of rural livelihoods. Therefore, agricultural water interventions should be accompanied by complementary interventions.

Irrigation demands, combined with the needs of a growing population in Cauca Valley, have led to increased water scarcity in the region. The innovative Water Fund aims to secure freshwater supply by compensating upstream farmers to conserve or restore watershed headwaters.

The practice was used to facilitate the restoration of environmental conditions in the microbasin to improve farming production and the standard of living of the population by strengthening the resilience of the inhabitants and their production assets in the face of the effects of climate change, evidenced in the area by the El Niño and La Niña Phenomena.

MuSIASEM, originally developed for analyzing the metabolic pattern of energy of modern society, is now extended to consider the energy-food-water nexus thus characterizing simultaneously the metabolic pattern of energy, food and water in relation to socio-economic and ecological variables.
