Self-evaluation and Holistic Assessment of Climate Resilience of Farmers and Pastoralist (SHARP+)

Shocks and disturbances

This module examines the type, frequency and severity of shocks and disturbances, both climatic and non-climatic, experienced by the household over the past three years. It furthermore observes the impact of the shocks experienced and the adaptation capacities developed by households.

Contribution to resilience

The ability of agricultural households to cope with climate and non-climate shocks, through their adaptive capacities, is central to the concept of resilience. It allows agricultural households and agroecosystems to maintain essential function despite disruptions. When impacts remain moderate, the experience of shocks can strengthen adaptation mechanisms and prepare systems to better respond to future crises. However, if these disruptions exceed a certain threshold, they risk permanently compromising the system's functions. Strengthening this adaptive capacity, upstream, therefore makes it possible to limit losses, avoid irreversible shifts, and preserve livelihoods over the long term.
