FAO and World Vegetable Centre Ink $650,000 Deal to Boost Tanzania's Food Security

In a landmark move aimed at bolstering food security in Tanzania, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Vegetable Centre have signed an agreement to enhance vegetable farming through a $650,000 funding initiative. Announced on March 5, 2024, this collaboration is set to revolutionize seed improvement and agricultural practices in the region, marking a significant step towards achieving economic growth and sustainability in Africa.

The agreement underscores the FAO's dedication to improving vegetable farming across Tanzania and Africa, with Dr Kent Nnadozie highlighting the potential of vegetable farming to stimulate economic prosperity. The World Vegetable Centre, entrusted with the mission of advancing vegetable farming, aims to expand its seed bank, which is crucial for ensuring seed security and fostering economic development. With over 7,000 seed varieties currently in stock, the centre is on a mission to reach 15,000 by next year and 40,000 by 2030.
