قد تصيب الأمراض المنقولة بالغذاء أي فرد في أي مكان، ويسهم إدراك حجم العبء في تمكين السلطات الوطنية وأصحاب الأعمال مناتخاذ إجراءات موجهة ومحدّدة الأهداف وتُعد البيانات الموثوقة بشأن العبء الصحي للأغذية غير الآمنة ركيزة أساسية للسياسات القائمةعلى الأدلة العلمية، والعمل المتكامل متعدّد القطاعات، والخيارات الواعية من قِبل المستهلك
ويستفيد جميع الأطراف على امتداد السلسلة الغذائية — من المزارعين والمنتجين إلى الناقلين وتجار التجزئة ومفتشي الأغذية والطهاةوالمستهلكين - من المعارف العلمية وتطبيق الإرشادات الواضحة للحد من مخاطر التلوث والوقاية من الأمراض ويمكن للحكومات أنتترجم البيانات إلى سياسات
وتدخلات فعّالة من حيث التكلفة، ويمكن للمنشآت الغذائية أن تحسّن ممارساتها، كما يمكن للأفراد اتخاذ قرارات قائمة على الأدلة وفياليوم العالمي لسلامة الأغذية، نؤكد أن البيانات الصحية تمثل ركيزة
