New York – The sustained increase in global food prices has had a profound impact on food security and nutrition, particularly in low-income countries where households spend a larger share of their income on food. A special event held today at the United Nations headquarters, on the margins of the ECOSOC High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), examined the drivers and consequences of the 2021–2023 food inflation crisis, as well as the policy responses needed to mitigate its effects.

The hybrid briefing, held under the title “Refugee Programmes Under Pressure: Addressing Forced Displacement and Food Insecurity,” took place ahead of the Global Refugee Forum Progress Review and called for urgent, dignified, and sustained action. 

The event highlighted the Right to Food as a legal and policy tool to drive better nutrition, particularly for vulnerable populations. 

Rome/Paris – Production and calorie intake of animal-source products are expected to increase as incomes rise in middle-income countries, but further increases in food production through improvements in agricultural productivity will be necessary to reduce under-nourishment and agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at a global level, according to a new report released today by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
