Mountains are home to a variety of ecosystems that provide vital services. Mountain ecosystems cool local temperatures, increase water retention, provide carbon storage, and reduce the risk of erosion and landslides. But mountain ecosystems are at risk from planetary crises. This publication analyses several mountain ecosystem restoration projects and recommends how the UN Decade’s Ten Principles for Ecosystem Restoration can be applied to mountain ecosystems.

In 2023, temperature records were broken, while storms, floods, droughts and heatwaves caused widespread devastation. UNEP’s Adaptation Gap Report 2023: Underfinanced. Underprepared – Inadequate investment and planning on climate adaptation leaves world exposed finds that progress on climate adaptation is slowing when it should be accelerating to address these rising climate change impacts.
Mountains are multi-risk areas due to complex interactions between natural and socioeconomic factors. These multiple risks can manifest locally but can also have severe impacts in distant lowland areas, thus requiring coordinated approaches across sectors and regions. Moreover, mountain risks are embedded in the specific natural, cultural, social and economic contexts of mountains, which call for local knowledge and livelihood options that can adapt to and reduce exposure to these risks.
Youth representatives from 26 countries who participated in the IPROMO 2023 Summer School, held in Italy on 10-25 July 2023 under the theme "Youth and the future of Mountain Forests", call for greater efforts by relevant local and national stakeholders and the international community towards the restoration and conservation of mountain ecosystems.
