International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

Certified E-Learning Course on Multilateral System of Access and Benefit-sharing of the International Treaty

13/12/2023

Rome, 13 December 2023 — The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture  unveiled an interactive “certified eLearning course on the Multilateral System of Access and Benefit-sharing," which is available for free and is accessible worldwide.

“The Multilateral System of Access and Benefit-sharing is a critical component of the International Treaty, and this course has been designed to equip learners with useful insights into the rationale and the operations of the System, its connection with the 2030 Development Agenda for Sustainable Development and the functioning of the Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA), used for the global exchange of plant genetic resources around the globe” said Kent Nnadozie, Secretary of the International Treaty. “The material contained in this course reflects the cumulative experience of Contracting Parties and stakeholders gained since 2007, when the Multilateral System became operational,” he added.

The Multilateral System (MLS), an innovative mechanism of the International Treaty, encompasses 64 critical crops and forages, representing 80% of global plant-based food consumption. Upon joining the International Treaty, Contracting Parties (so far comprising 151 countries and the European Union) commit to sharing their plant genetic diversity and related data through the MLS, along with additional resources designated by other holders. This collective effort is currently the largest global exchange mechanism for plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA), comprising a pool of close to 2.5 million accessible accessions of genetic resources.

This course is tailored for a diverse audience, including policymakers, agricultural experts, researchers, students, and individuals passionate about sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation. The course is divided into four lessons of about 30 – 45 minutes each, using multimedia elements, case studies, and interactive assessments designed to engage the learner and enhance comprehension. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a digital certification.

The e-certified learning course has been developed by the International Treaty, in collaboration with the FAO Office Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Environment, and the FAO eLearning Academy.  It is based on one the five Educational Modules on the International Treaty, published in 2022.
