The GFCM has always been committed to supporting its contracting parties, cooperating non-contracting parties (CPCs) and other partners, including farmer organizations. Through the Scientific Advisory Committee on Aquaculture (CAQ), it promotes sustainable aquaculture development, with particular attention to small-scale producers and the SDGs.
Under its 2030 Strategy, capacity development includes aquaculture spatial planning (allocated zones for aquaculture [AZAs] and aquaculture management areas [AMAs]), geographic information systems (GIS) tools, environmental monitoring programmes (EMPs), carrying capacity estimation, aquatic animal health and welfare, digital innovation, aquaculture statistics, and promotion of best practices, and organization of aquaculture censuses.
GFCM action
- Support national aquaculture censuses to strengthen data collection and inform evidence-based planning
- Provide technical assistance to strengthen aquaculture governance and legal and regulatory frameworks
- Support the development of national aquaculture roadmaps, strategies and action plans
- Provide capacity development on aquaculture spatial planning, including AZAs, AMAs and the use of GIS and carrying capacity estimation
- Provide technical assistance and training on the implementation of harmonized EMPs
- Strengthen aquaculture data collection, reporting and analysis through the GFCM Information System for the Promotion of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (SIPAM)
