Through this open call, we are inviting Indigenous organizations, UN Agencies, philanthropists, academia, governments, and other relevant actors to apply for side-event spaces that will be held at the Nomad Indigenous FoodLab (a Saami nomadic tent) during the week of the meeting of the Global-Hub on Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems (13-17th October 2025).

The 24th Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) started at the UN General Assembly Hall, New York, on 21 April 2025 and lasted until the 2 May. Hundreds of Indigenous leaders and representatives from across the globe convened to discuss and address current issues, opportunities and challenges that affect Indigenous Peoples’ lives worldwide. Guaranteeing Indigenous Peoples’ right to mobility is essential to preserve their food and knowledge systems, as well as biodiversity and food security. This is the main message from the Global-Hub on Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems’ side-event that took place on the 22nd of April in the framework of the 24th Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), which was based on the upcoming Global-Hub collective paper on Mobility within Indigenous Peoples' strategies for food, livelihoods and territoriality, and its importance for biodiversity conservation.

The Global-Hub on Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems is gaining momentum as it welcomes new members and deepens its pool of expertise to feed into current global discussions on food security, nutrition, and the sustainable transformation of food systems: elements at the centre of the work of the World Committee on Food Security (CFS).

At the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Cali, Colombia, groundbreaking initiatives on Indigenous Peoples’ biocentric restoration were unveiled by the FAO in partnership with Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Indigenous Peoples’ representatives. 

FAO, as a specialized UN Agency, works for the full recognition of the role of Indigenous Peoples´ food and knowledge systems in biodiversity conservation and reaffirms the importance of respecting their collective and customary rights according to the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the FAO Policy on Indigenous and Tribal Peoples.
